Glossary
In this evolving glossary, you can find a list of terms that are core to Prime’s identity. (Click on each for details.) Prime only adds terms that we define or apply in a unique way. We don't add terms that are well-established in climate science (visit the EPA!) or defined through Project Frame, one of Prime’s Impact Accountability programs. Happy reading!
Additionality
In the context of Prime’s investment decision making, when a solution’s impact potential would not be enabled, accelerated, or deepened were it not for support from charitable sources.
Catalytic Capital
Capital that is designed to overcome specific, well-defined financial risks or other barriers that prevent investors from directing conventional capital – with terms that are representative of the asset class – toward impactful projects or companies.
Climate Solution
Typically used at Prime to refer to a product or service that has the potential to directly or indirectly reduce future emissions (eg, zero-carbon electricity or materials) or remove greenhouse gases from the atmosphere (eg, ocean sequestration or direct air capture).
GHG Impact Potential
The change (generally assumed to be beneficial) in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions or removal that an investment may cause, compared to baseline scenarios and assuming a standardized growth trajectory.
Program-Related Investment (PRI)
Financial investments by U.S. foundations with specific restrictions, including that the primary purpose is accomplishing one or more of the foundation's exempt purposes and the production of income or appreciation of property is not a significant purpose.
